My work for CARE for AIDS began in 2011 when I asked Justin, Cornel and Duncan to speak at Cornerstone, a monthly forum for ministries to discuss opportunities to serve both locally and internationally. I was drawn into the way the Lord wove the lives of these three men together. And I was hooked.
When are we headed to Kenya?
Less than a year later, I embarked on my first African adventure and was able to experience what this organization does abroad, not knowing at the time that my volunteer role would lead me to become the new Director of Development for CFA.
As an educator for almost 15 years in both the classroom setting and training teachers, I quickly saw the innovative way that CFA sought to affect the lives of their clients and hope to bring that experience into this new role. My admiration for this organization is rooted in their mission to operate life transforming centers that serve men and women living with HIV /AIDS including their desire to empower individuals to live full and independent lives, even when it isn’t the quick fix.
Hannah is the face that brings this concept to life for me. While on my first trip to Kenya, she invited our team into her home, built of metal and mud, to share her story of how CFA empowered her. The seminars provided life skills she would need to care for her children. Job training taught her how to make soap she could sell at the markets, providing a means for income. And her mentors encouraged her to build a life of triumph over tragedy, rewriting the end of her story that was so deeply affected by a paralyzing disease.
There are thousands of more who have been or will be blessed through this organization, and I am excited to see how God will use me in the adventures to come working with an organization like CARE for AIDS!
